LADIES PRESIDENT MESSAGE Oct - Dec 2010
One thing that I find disturbing is that while we seem to get inundated with news of Hollywood celebrities ~ their infidelities and new hairdos, we rarely see coverage about the sacrifices of our Armed Forces. In a month long media circus waiting for Lindsay Lohan to come down off her high and her court proceedings how much coverage did you see about the 56 soldiers that were killed in Iraq &
Afghanistan? .. That’s right, 56 men and women died in August ~ defending our freedom. One of those soldiers was Jamal Rhett, a local man from Palmyra.
That said, please try and show your support for our troops—come out to a Welcome Home at our Legion, or one the Yellow Ribbon Club, A Heroes Welcome or the Warriors Watch is having. Visit their websites and sign up on their email list. You can also show your support by dropping off some items to be sent to the troops. Drop items at the American Legion during business hours. To see a list of items for donation, visit our website or see the list on the Bulletin Board at the Legion.
Please don’t forget our veterans on November 11th—Veterans Day. Check local papers for local events honoring our veterans and be sure to come to the Legion at 6:30pm for our Veterans Day Ceremony and Flag Retirement.
By the time you read this, our American Legion Auxiliary will have Patriotic Products for sale—they will be available online and at the canteen. There are many different patriotic designs and the product line includes T-Shirt, Sweatshirts, Mugs, Steins, Calendars, Kids clothing, license plate holders, etc and more! We may be selling a line of candles for the holiday season as well. Stay updated with what's going on by visiting our website at www.alch372.com or stopping by the Legion. Remember the holidays are right around the corner !!
If you have an hour to spare on Thanksgiving, come out to Americas Best Value Inn, Rt 70, Cherry Hill at 11am for the 7th Annual Thanksgiving for the Troops. Busloads of troops, who are unable to be home for Thanksgiving are surprised by a Thanksgiving feast. Bring your flag and help welcome them in for their surprise dinner! This event is sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans and Spevak family.
We will be having our Children’s Xmas Party at 11am on December 11th. If you are going to bring your children, please RSVP to SQuinn9807@aol.com or 856-495-7270 by November 19th. We need RSVP’s so we can determine how much food & goodies to get. It’s a fun time for the kids ~ special guests include a Clown and Santa ! So remember, please RSVP!
The Adult Holiday Party will be at 7pm on December 11th. It’s sure to be a great time, and you can’t beat the price—$10 per person. Lots of food, fun and DJ.
Over the last several months the Legion has participated in a variety of events ~ Welcome Homes, 911 Flagging, Operation Stand Down for Homeless Veterans, and POW/MIA Recognition Day Services to name a few. Stay tuned for more events on the horizon and please try and make it out for them. A good majority of these events are last minute things, or at least not known far enough in advance to make the Scoop Newsletter, so its important that you try and visit our website for updates and/or stop by the Legion and check out the bulletin board.
On a somber note, we recently lost another longtime Auxiliary Member and bartender, Jeanie Rooney. She is sorely missed. We’d also like to extend our best wishes and speedy recovery to some of our other Auxiliary members experiencing health issues. Please know you are all on our minds and in our prayers.
For God and Country,
Sue Quinn-Morris
President
